What this is

Not a competition. A standard.

Your book is not judged against other books. It is measured against the published IIBA Standard of Excellence, in the category you enter it in. Every book that meets the standard receives the award, and there is no limit on how many can.

That means your recognition never comes at another author's expense, and it never depends on who else happened to submit that month.

You are not competing for a place. You are meeting a bar that was published before you paid.

The reverse also holds. A book that does not meet the standard is not recognized, regardless of how few or how many were submitted. The bar does not move.

How your book is evaluated

Every book is read in full. Nothing is assessed on a synopsis, a description, or the marketing copy you supplied.

Step one

Assessment by LMAS

The Literary Metric Assessment System is our proprietary evaluation system. It reads your complete manuscript and assesses it against all ten pillars of the Standard of Excellence, in each category you enter.

Step two

Review by our lead reviewer

An instrument produces consistency. It does not produce judgment. Every book is then read in context by our lead reviewer against the expectations of its category, because excellence in a memoir does not look like excellence in a business book.

Step three

Determination

The book is measured against the standard and nothing else. Books that meet it receive the award. Books that do not are never listed publicly, and their authors are welcome to submit again.

The 10 Pillars of the Standard of Excellence

Every book is assessed across all ten. They fall into four groups: how the book is written, what it contains, what it does for the reader, and how it is finished.

The Writing PILLARS 1–3

Pillar One

Voice, Tone and Style

Whether the book sounds like someone in particular. A voice that is distinctive, consistent, and suited to the work it is carrying.

Pillar two

Craft and Technical Execution

Sentence-level command. Clarity, grammar, rhythm, and the discipline to show rather than summarize.

Pillar three

Structure and Organization

How the book is built. Chapter architecture, pacing, transitions, and whether the reader always knows where they are.

Pillar four

Originality and Concept Strength

Whether the book brings something of its own. Not whether the subject is new, but whether the treatment is.

Pillar five

Depth of Content and Insight

How far the book goes into its own subject. Nuance and understanding rather than a competent summary of what is already known.

The Reader PILLARS 6-8

Pillar six

Audience Impact and Purpose Fulfillment

Whether the book does the job it set out to do, for the reader it was written for.

Emotional and Psychological Impact

Whether the book is felt as well as understood, earned by what happens on the page rather than asserted by the narrator.

What the book amounts to as a whole, and what the reader carries away once it is closed.

Standard review takes 10 to 12 weeks. Expedited results takes 3 to 4. You are notified of the outcome for every category you entered.

If your book meets the standard

Your book receives the International Impact Book Award in that category, and you become a Distinguished Author.

Who is behind this

Founded by an author who needed this to exist

Nim Stant is a media producer, USA Today bestselling author, TEDx speaker, and the founder of the International Impact Book Awards.

She came to the United States from Thailand with a master's degree in dance and no business background. After becoming a solo mom in a new country, she learned entrepreneurship the hard way, through pressure, survival, and execution. Then she wrote her first book, believing success would come from selling copies.

It did not. That realization is why this program exists.

She built the International Impact Book Awards to give authors the recognition and credibility a book alone rarely creates, and to make sure it was earned against a published standard rather than bought. Today the awards recognize authors in more than forty countries, with events in Phoenix and Hollywood.

Before you submit

Is my whole book actually read?

Yes. Your complete manuscript is assessed, not a sample, a synopsis, or the description you supplied. This is the single most important difference between a real evaluation and a certificate that arrives in exchange for a fee.

Am I competing against other authors?

No. Your book is measured against the published Standard of Excellence and nothing else. There is no limit on how many books can be recognized. Author of the Year, our annual competition in Hollywood, works differently and is entered separately.

What does the $79 cover?

Your complete manuscript read in full, assessed against all ten pillars by LMAS, reviewed in context by our lead reviewer, and a written outcome for the category you entered. It does not buy recognition, placement, or a ticket to anything.

Can I enter more than one category?

Yes, up to five. Each is assessed independently against that category's expectations, because excellence in a memoir does not look like excellence in a business book. A book can receive the award in one category and not another.

What happens if my book does not meet the standard?

You are notified privately and never listed publicly. You are welcome to submit again in a future cycle, with the book revised or with a new one. If you added the Impact Assessment Summary at checkout, it is delivered with your result.

Why is the Impact Assessment Summary a separate cost?

Because it answers a different question. Your submission fee buys an evaluation against the standard, and every author receives that outcome. The Impact Assessment Summary is an editorial assessment of the book itself, pillar by pillar, including what is working and what would make it stronger. That is closer to a professional manuscript review than to an awards result, and it is optional for that reason. Authors who add it receive it with their result whether or not their book meets the standard.

Which books are eligible?

Books published in 2020 or later, in English, whether self-published, hybrid, or traditionally published. First-time and established authors alike, anywhere in the world.

Do I have to attend an event?

No. Your recognition is complete whether or not you travel. Distinguished Authors are invited to the next Honors and Gala Weekend in Phoenix, held twice each year, and authors who cannot attend can request their award be delivered to them.

Are book awards worth entering at all?

It depends what you want from one. No award sells a book on its own. What recognition provides is third-party credibility you can point to on a cover, in a pitch to a bookstore or a podcast, and in a media kit. If you are weighing programs, ask three things of any of them: are the criteria published before you pay, is the recipient list public, and is anything else being sold to you along the way.
